The Benefits to Protein Powder:
Protein powders are probably the most popular nutritional supplement. With so many choices, it makes it hard to figure which protein is the right one. I hope to shed a little light and guidance on this for you today.
What is protein?
Protein is an essential macro nutrient that helps build muscle, repair tissue, make enzymes and hormones. Using protein powder may also aid weight loss and help people tone their muscles. (1)
Protein Powder vs Whole Foods:
I am not going to say one is superior to the other because I do not feel either is. This is an experiment I did on myself for months on both sides of the spectrum. For six months I did whole foods only for protein. I also, did another six months in which I had nothing but protein powder. Did I notice any difference from avoiding protein powders absolutely not. It should be noted that I had same daily calories and proteins during this experiment, so nothing was changed.
Disclaimer: This is all be based on my personal experience, not science backed data.
Whole foods:
Pros:
- So much more variety to eat an enjoy =)
Neutral: (Can be a positive or a negative based on your goals)
- You feel full longer
Cons:
- It was a little harder to manage, all that eating.
- Also, much harder on digestion, too much meat to eat, it never settled well in my stomach
- It isn’t cost effective compared to protein powders
Protein Powders:
Pros:
- Cheaper
- Easy to eat, it’s not hard to digest and break down
- Convenient and time efficient
Neutral: (Can be a positive or a negative based on your goals)
- Hunger kicks in quicker with protein powders
Cons:
- No variety
- While it is easier to digest after awhile having constant fluids makes the stomach also feel unsettled and bubbly.
My Personal Conclusion:
Nothing changed visual in my physique nor my gym progress during this experiment. I personally feel a mixture of both works best. You get all the rewards of both worlds without the cons.
So Many Protein Powders What Do I Choose?
Whey proteins tend to have the best amino acid break down compared to other proteins. This is about the only real difference. Do not over think protein powders too much or buy the most expensive whey isolate. A simple whey concentrate will work just the same for a fraction of the price.
Supplement companies like to add some new gimmick to jack up the price but they work pretty much all the same. A protein powder that will take 5 minutes vs 20 minutes to digest is not change anything, it is ridiculous how some companies try to rip people off based off this.
The only other thing you will want to be mindful of are excessive carbs or sugars. Protein powder should not have a lot of carbs or sugars. A lot of the convenience store bottled protein drinks are loaded with carbs and sugars.
For My Fellow Vegans:
I personally am not a vegan, for years vegan proteins have been horrible for so many reasons. The good news vegan proteins have come a long way since then and are now a viable option. If you are vegan you will be just fine without whey. I came across a very tasty vegan protein while spending time at my girlfriend’s house in lock down during Corona virus (I hope the virus is gone by the time you read this). It has a surprisingly good break down and flavor, something vegan proteins have lacked in the past.
What Protein Do I Use?
I have stuck with a few protein powders over the years. Feel free to try them out and see what you like. I am not endorsed by any of these protein powders that I am listing. These are just a few options I have stuck with. Feel free to recommend some protein powders you guys like, I am always into trying new things.
Whey Options
- Bodystrong Protein: What I currently use and my personal favorite for many years Rich Chocolate flavor.
- Dynamize Whey Isolate: What I used for before finding Bodystrong, It’s a little more pricey and sadly the chocolate flavor doesn’t taste as good in my opinion.
- Dynatamize Café Mocha: When I want a little caffeine mixed into my protein I use this. I ordered the flavor by accident once but I really like enjoyed it. I’m caffeine sensitive so I don’t use it all the time because I like to sleep.
Vegan Options
- Vega Chocolate: My corona lockdown protein. It’s really good tasting and surprisingly has everything I look for in a protein.
- Purely Inspired Organic Whey Protein: Lighter than Vega, I would say this is runner up for me.
