Vegan vs Whey Protein, Which is Better? Who Will Win?

After my last protein blog about various protein powders I used. A client asked for a more in depth explanation of vegan proteins vs whey proteins. How surprised, that I enjoyed the vegan protein so much. They wanted to know more of my take on both.

Proteins Powders Have Come A Long Way:

Protein powders have come an extremely long way. Roughly in the late 70’s early 80’s we only had egg-based proteins. Extra protein was a game changer for athletes and bodybuilders. It meant we could have a more affordable sources of protein and a means to consume more protein than before. Protein was considered the holy grail of fitness during that time and in many ways still is.

You might be wondering why egg based proteins aren’t a popular option today. They still exist but we can get the same from egg whites. Egg proteins tend to have a nasty smell and do you want to be farting eggs smells all over the place! (It’s really not that pleasant)

Still for those interested in giving an egg protein powders a shot click on the picture of the eggs below. It will give you a list of various egg powders and you get 10% off. I personally have never tried egg protein, so none of these are my personal recommendation.

All The Whey

Introducing whey protein the heavy weight champion of protein powders. Many various proteins have come but the whey lives on victorious!

  • The cost per gram of protein makes it extremely affordable.
  • Whey has an amino acid break down that comes in whey is amazing.
  •  Whey can blend well with many  flavors so it can taste good. This is something eggs simply could not do. It’s just too hard to get egg taste out of the powder.
  • Whey protein is fast digesting something many athletes are seeking.
  • Whey protein also works well in food recipes

Vegan Life Begins

I will be honest I wasn’t one to jump on the vegan bandwagon, to me it felt very much like a cult when it first came onto the scene plus I didn’t appreciate the way vegans bullied non vegans. I disagreed with vegans being healthy diet as well.  I’ve long stood by vegetarians and pescetarian diets both of which I think are extremely healthy. One of my biggest issues with vegans diets is the amino acid break down is severely lacking. The second issue is all protein sources appear to be extremely high in carbohydrates.

The Original Vegan Protein Powders

I'm not a fan of soy

Vegan protein powder in the beginning had high carbohydrates. The amino acid break down was just poor in comparison to whey. Old vegan protein texture was gritty. It never seemed to blend well. You had two powder choices peas or soy. Soy has an extremely high amount of pesticides on them and now you are grinding them up into a powder form. It was just a horrible idea great way to get cancer and to watch your testosterone plummet. I recommend everybody do research on the how horrible soy is for you.

Vegan Protein of Today

Vegan protein powders have come a long way. They blend well now mostly made from peas. They also, use added food sources to make the amino acid break down better. The taste has improved dramatically. The carbohydrates still tend to be on the slightly higher side but not by as much.

Most importantly they specialize in more organic powders something that is especially important for vegan powders. As I said above non organic soy protein is horrible. Perhaps it was the pesticides that caused that god-awful taste they once had.

Conclusion Which is Better

It the battle of vegan vs whey. Whey protein simply is better however vegan protein is now an option. Vegan protein will cost a little more. I cannot stress enough always get organic when it comes to vegan protein. While before it wasn’t even worth considering vegan protein. Now it stands as a particularly good alternative if you choose to be a vegan for moral reasons or are severely lactose intolerant.

The battle between vegan vs whey is not as lopsided as it once was. I’m glad for this people need multi options. I feel like I can say they have them now, nice job supplement companies.

As time goes on, I’m drifting more towards the pescatarian lifestyle personally.

Bluehost with WordPress is pretty easy. I would say use Oceon WP template as it allows a lot of customization. Anything you need to fine you can type in YouTube as you get stuck. Good luck.
